A Fatal Accident Strikes at Japanese Mountain Resort: Five-Year-Old Boy Is Killed in Conveyor Accident.

A young boy was killed during a family ski vacation in Japan after his arm became caught in a resort travelator.

“Adults, too, occasionally find it a bit daunting.” – Comments from a regular customer.

Details of the Tragic Accident

Sunday morning, the child, identified as Hinata Goto, was nearing the end of the conveyor at a Hokkaido resort when he fell down. His arm became caught in the mechanism.

The travelator had a safety device, but it failed to activate. The machine only stopped when the boy's mother pressed the stop control.

Rescue workers spent 40 minutes disassembling part of the machine to rescue the boy, who by then had fallen unconscious. He was later pronounced dead at the medical facility.

Resort Statements and Equipment Safety

Staff at the ski area indicated that the travelator's automatic stop system, which should cease operations if it sensed a trapped object, had been tested earlier in the day.

Police are conducting a probe to evaluate whether there was any professional negligence, such as in the manufacturing and upkeep of the equipment.

Equipment Specifications and Involved Travelator

  • Put in place about six years ago: The conveyor is roughly 30 meters in length and 60cm (24 in) wide.
  • No hand rails: The design transports people between the resort's parking lot and the pistes.

Japanese media quoted other guests saying they have experienced balance issues while using the same conveyor.

Future Actions by Ski Area Management

A representative for the resort apologised for the tragedy and said they will act to ensure it does not happen again.

This area is known to be the ski capital of Japan and welcomes a high volume of guests every year, with the majority of them visiting during the cold season for ski holidays.
