British Sports Chair Outlines Artificial Intelligence Strategy to Boost Great Britain Competitors For Upcoming Podium Wins.
The Games and Paralympic teams need to embrace artificial intelligence and foster increased teamwork to sustain their current high-level performance, according to the nation's elite sport agency leader Nick Webborn.
"We have been a highly prosperous nation, and to keep that position or to possibly go higher, we're going to have to operate in new ways," he stated.
Webborn stressed the need to "think smarter" and "utilize things like AI appropriately in sport," alongside enhancing partnerships between various sports bodies.
Harnessing Innovation for Performance
The chairman's plan extends beyond medal targets. He highlighted several key fields where AI could provide significant benefits:
- Talent Identification: Using analytics to discover promising athletes.
- Reducing Injuries: Forecasting and minimizing physical hazards via biomechanical monitoring.
- Virtual Assessment: Enabling equitable classification for disabled sportspeople removing the need for travel.
This comes after a previous announcement that British athletes would be offered AI-based protection from online abuse.
Reviewing Past Olympics Performance
While Team GB secured 65 medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, equalling their London 2012 total, their first-place count of 14 saw them drop to seventh in the overall table.
"We want to continue exceeding expectations," said Webborn. "The focus is on those small details, how we turn those second places into gold."
Webborn additionally praised the ParalympicsGB team, which has consistently placed second behind China, but observing that other nations are closing the gap.
Athlete Welfare as a Foundation
In his initial discussion since taking up the role, Webborn put great importance on competitor welfare and life after sport.
"Supporting the competitors who come into our high-performance sports system... preparing for their future, so that the abilities they acquire make them a better person... is extremely important to me," he affirmed.
Webborn suggested that a supportive system doesn't just fosters superior performers but also better people for the long term.
Upcoming Ambitions and Hosting Major Events
For the future, UK Sport is tasked with securing major competitions to Britain. Confirmed tournaments include the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.
The chairman further expressed a long-term "aspiration" to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games again, possibly around 2040.
"It was brilliant in 2012? I'd like for more members of the British public to experience those moments too," he reflected.
Webborn proposed that a potential bid could be creative, perhaps featuring multiple host cities like Liverpool and Manchester co-hosting.
