Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new development, Adams reversed course, announcing he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how vital this election is,” Adams stated.
Adams continued, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention worldwide and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”
The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a heated candidate debate.
