Shot-stopper Mary Earps has emphatically said that her newly released autobiography was never intended to “tear anyone down” and voiced unease that media response has been “misinterpreted.”

Controversial Comments and Fan Backlash

The former England player, who had a vital part in the championship win, faced backlash from fans and Blues coach Sonia Bompastor after commenting about past Lioness Hannah Hampton and head coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her memoir, Earps allegedly stated told Wiegman she was “rewarding bad behaviour” by recalling Hampton to the England squad after omitting her for being “unruly and inconsistent.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps told reporters.

Defending Her Intentions

Earps firmly declared that the autobiography was not designed to harm individuals.

• “That isn’t my personality as a individual.”
• “These are real events. It has consequences. It is not entertainment.”

She also discussed how women’s football has evolved into a realm that has become “a bit like entertainment,” where private matters are scrutinized heavily for audience entertainment.

Relationship with Wiegman

Earps mentioned being replaced as England’s number one before the European Championship and how that strained her relationship with Wiegman.

She stated it was “not an abrupt downfall” in their connection—just a difference of perspectives—and she maintains respect for the coach.

“Certain events that happened in the summer that I hoped had unfolded otherwise,” Earps added.

Personal Struggles

In her book, Earps opened up about the harassment she endured at during her education, describing it as a “really hard” chapter to go back to because it revived previous trauma.

• “I failed to defend myself at that time.”
• “I frequently thought that people were against me for the majority of my years.”
• “I became accustomed to feel like no one truly cared.”

These feelings led to anxiety episodes, and Earps shared she had issues with self-perception and turned to alcohol during the Covid pandemic to cope with emotional difficulties.

Personal Life and Future Plans

Earps recently shared that she is in a relationship with a woman and shared her happiness about her relationship.

She also mentioned her hopes for motherhood and revealed she has undergone egg freezing for future use.

“I really want to be a mother and have a family,” Earps stated. “I am passionate about soccer, but I aspire to have a child at a later stage.”

Earps characterized the medical treatment as “intense and intrusive” and pushed for more research tailored to sports professionals undergoing similar procedures.

Throughout the interview, Earps maintained that she has no second thoughts about her career or personal choices, stressing that she always proceeded with principle.
