Inuit Women Secure Judicial Victory over Struggle against Denmark regarding Forced Contraceptive Coil Scandal.

Victims of a past program where numerous of Inuit females, some minors reportedly were forcibly fitted with intrauterine devices (IUDs) without their knowledge or consent are declaring victory in their legal fight against the Danish government.

Officials have announced that they are now entitled to compensation from a settlement fund.

Parliamentary Settlement Finalized

Folketinget, and the government, reached an agreement granting approximately four thousand five hundred Greenlandic women to claim kr. 300,000 (£35,000) per person.

This decision follows a lengthy battle led by 143 women that filed a lawsuit seeking compensation over the trauma and distress they experienced, arguing it constituted a violation of their human rights.

Historical Background

Denmark administered the territory under colonial rule for decades maintaining control of the island's healthcare system until 1992.

In September, after years where it did not acknowledge the violations, the government made an official apology. The prime minister apologized for the “institutional prejudice” targeting women and girls by the Danish healthcare system.

“It has had major consequences on the Greenlandic women who suffered both bodily and mental trauma,” said a government minister.

Redress Procedure Details

Authorities stated those subjected to the procedure covertly between 1960 and 1991 would be able to seek compensation from April 2026. Relevant legislation will come into force in June.

Based on results of an independent investigation of medical procedures during that time, an estimated 4,500 individuals are potentially entitled to compensation.

To qualify, applicants will need to:

• Provide a “plausible account” detailing what happened.
• Have lived in Greenland during the qualifying period.
• State under oath that they possessed no knowledge nor gave permission for it to occur.

Voices from the Survivors

A women, who was fourteen when she was told to report to the hospital for no clear reason, described the experience like an assault.

“Our activism as speakers to the media has been effective,” she said. “It began in 2022 resulting in within three years we have secured an official apology and financial acknowledgment.”

A different perspective shared happiness, stating, “We are happy. As my mother put it: we won.” Although there is a view the amount could have been greater, there is contentment regarding the acknowledgment of what happened.

Ministerial Responses

An Inuit official called the compensation being “long overdue”. Stating clearly, “This isn't about the money. It concerns recognition of the hurt and its profound implications.”

The relevant health minister acknowledged the scandal represent a “troubling period within the joint past”, noting while redress “will not erase the pain for survivors” yet it “serves to recognize and express regret over the experiences.”
