Miami's Eileen Higgins Voted In as First Democrat Mayor of Miami in Nearly 30 Years.
Democrat Eileen Higgins has won the Miami mayoral race in the state of Florida, marking the initial instance a Democratic candidate has done so in nearly 30 years.
A one-time commissioner, Higgins prevailed in the runoff by securing fifty-nine percent of the ballots, defeating her GOP rival Emilio Gonzalez, who was backed by Donald Trump and obtained nearly 41% of the vote, per official results.
"Voters picked a different path... you chose competence over chaos," stated Higgins at her celebration.
Higgins' victory extends a streak of recent Democratic victories.
A Landmark Victory on Multiple Fronts
With her win, Higgins, 61 years old, also emerges as the initial woman to be chosen as mayor, US media reported.
Higgins commented her victory "heralds the commencement of the work ahead" and vowed to tackle the issues Miami still faces.
"Our administration will run a city that belongs to everyone," she added.
Key Issues and Contrast with the President
Running on issues including immigration policy and cost-effective homes, she sought to contrast her leadership style against that of the Trump administration.
In a this week's interview, Higgins observed: "The President and I have very different points of view on how we should approach our community members, many of whom are immigrants."
During the election forum, she described the president's immigration enforcement "inhumane and cruel."
She vowed to cooperate with the federal government on topics where they can find common ground, but "where our views differ, I'll make my voice heard," she stated.
Support and the Election Path
Despite the race being officially without party labels, Higgins received the endorsement of multiple influential Democratic figures, including former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Besides backing from Trump, Gonzalez was also backed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Higgins now succeeds former mayor Francis Suarez, who attempted a run for the GOP presidential nomination.
Amid a National Pattern
In the run-up to Higgins' victory, the Democrats achieved major successes in the first major elections of the current administration last month.
- In New York City, a Democratic candidate overcame former governor Andrew Cuomo.
- Abigail Spanberger secured victory in the gubernatorial election in the state of Virginia, flipping the office from GOP control.
- Another Democrat was voted into the governor's office in the state of New Jersey.
