Mount Mahameru Outburst in Indonesia Prompts Emergency Relocations

The nation's Semeru volcano, the highest peak on Java island, has erupted, blanketing several villages with volcanic ash, leading to evacuations and causing officials to elevate the alert to the highest level.

The mountain in the province of East Java released blistering plumes of fiery ash and a combination of stone, molten rock, and gases that travelled up to 4 miles down its sides several times from noon to evening, while a thick column of fiery clouds rose 2km into the air, according to the nation's geological authority.

The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced officials to increase the volcano’s alert level twice, from the third-highest level to the highest, the authority said. No casualties have been announced.

More than 300 residents in the three villages most endangered in the area of Lumajang were relocated to government shelters, according to a spokesperson for the national emergency management body.

He stated that increased activity of the volcano on Wednesday afternoon led officials to widen the danger zone to 8km from the summit. Residents were advised to keep away from an zone along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the path of the lava flow, as scorching gases moved down the volcano's sides.

Footage on social media showed a dense cloud of ash moving through a wooded ravine to a river beneath a overpass. Residents, some with faces covered with ash and rain, fled to makeshift refuges or left for other safe areas.

Regional news outlets reported that authorities were facing challenges to rescue about 178 individuals trapped on the 12,060-foot peak at the Ranu Kumbolo observation station. The party comprised 137 climbers, 15 carriers, seven guides and six tourism officials, according to an official with the protected area.

“They remain secure at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” a spokesperson stated in a recorded message. He said the station was situated 2.8 miles from the summit on the northern slope of the mountain, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was observed moving to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation forced the group to spend the night there, he added.

The volcano, also called Mahameru, has burst many occasions in the past 200 years. However, as is the situation with many of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, thousands of residents still to live on its productive highlands.

The mountain's last major eruption was in late 2021, when 51 people were lost their lives and hundreds more were injured and settlements were buried in layers of mud. The event forced the relocation of more than 10,000 residents from their homes.

The country, an island chain of over 280 million people, is located along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a curved series of tectonic boundaries, and is susceptible to earthquakes and volcanism.
