The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.

"This decision was based on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he said.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

Yet his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
