Norrie Calls 'Most Significant Victory' After Battling Back from Behind to Overcome Alcaraz in Paris
Cameron Norrie secured the biggest success of his career by rallying from a early deficit to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the Paris Masters.
While he had before beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win signifies Norrie's maiden success over a sitting world top-ranked player.
"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who is now the latest UK male player in history to overcome a top-ranked player. "Returning from health issues last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to appreciate my performance in the latter part of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the biggest victory of my career, my initial victory over the top player and arguably the strongest competitor in the sport right now."
The British player, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme run of nine finals in a row and 17 straight premier event victories, which was the best series of performances in the Spanish star's young career.
Game Breakdown
Alcaraz appeared to be progressing easily towards victory early on as he eased through the initial stanza. Nevertheless, Norrie slowly fought his way back into the game by serving with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, grueling exchanges. His persistent shot tolerance and dependability gradually left its mark.
Through most of the match, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The young star seemed especially uncomfortable hitting his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the sport for much of this year, committing 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, the British player offered Alcaraz so few mistakes, sustaining his reliability, fitness and depth throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to move into the court and play aggressively.
Decisive Phase
In the tight final games, Norrie brilliantly kept his composure to defeat the best player in the world.
Career Context
After dealing for months due to a serious physical setback and challenges with his form, the tennis professional slipped as far down as 91st in the rankings this year. After making the last eight at the grass-court major and the French Open fourth round after that, this triumph reinforces the veteran's progress as he attempts to make his way to the world's top twenty and further. The Spanish sensation, in spite of his extraordinary achievements, is still hasn't solve how to display his top form on indoor courts.
