The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
