The US supreme court has declined an legal challenge from the Infowars host and maintained his $1.4bn defamation penalty that was given to the families of victims from the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shooting.
Background of the Legal Battle
The media personality had sought to overturn the judgment, which he was required to compensate after he disseminated inaccuracies about the massacre.
Jones had repeatedly stated the elementary school attack where 26 individuals were lost their lives was a staged event orchestrated by performers to push for firearms restrictions.
The affected families stated that Jones's lies provoked harassment from his audience, making it challenging for them to recover from the devastating event.
Legal Ruling
The supreme court did not explain its decision for its ruling, according to its orders list published on Tuesday.
As part of his appeal filed in last month, Jones claimed that a court official was wrong to rule against him for defamation and infliction of emotional distress without holding a trial.
Jones insisted that the massive penalty "cannot possibly be settled", adding that "the consequence is a financial death penalty via ruling placed upon a broadcaster whose show reaches millions".
Bankruptcy Proceedings
Jones and the broadcasting entity, Free Speech Systems, declared bankruptcy in two years ago after the massive ruling following legal actions initiated in Connecticut and Texas.
A subsequent investigation into Jones's financial and legal documents found that he had transferred assets worth millions of dollars beyond legal access as legal actions from the victims' families along with judicial fines accumulated against him over the preceding timeframe.
Meanwhile, in recent months, the court-appointed official handling Jones's financial proceedings claimed of trying to hide more than $5m from creditors.
Family Representation
In a response on the legal outcome, legal representative, an counsel acting for the affected parties, said: "The highest court properly rejected the media personality's challenge to avoid accountability for the distress he has created. We expect implementing the significant ruling and securing payment for what they have done."
