The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever stopped the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of an individual series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the continuing conflict between the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which was first established several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes and Future Intentions
The founder revealed that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which the company was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company in September, after many years of involvement, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
