As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
