The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
