A budget proposal that would end the most extended government shutdown in the nation's history is advancing toward the House of Representatives for a crucial vote on midweek.

On the sixth week of the budget deadlock, lawmakers are reassembling in Washington to decide whether to pass a Senate package that would finance federal agencies for two months.

GOP leaders voiced optimism the budget proposal would clear the House of Representatives, despite their slim advantage. But Democratic leadership pledged to fight it.
