While Beachgoers Fled Danger, Popular Image Depicts Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her back yard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, heard cracking sounds echoing across the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display told her something was wrong.

While standing on the street, speaking to a pair who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she heard someone approaching behind her. This turned out to be a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the direction that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and barefoot … He moved into something that surely every part of you would instruct you to go in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Heroism In the Wake of Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews caring for numerous the injured.

“The team demonstrate altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic beaches secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on that evening should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and process the terror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much positivity we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
