Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
